What Are Factory Farms?

The term, “Factory Farm” is a term used by anti – animal agriculture groups who have an agenda of wanting the public to no longer consume animal products, such as milk, cheese, eggs, meat, etc. They use the term to scare the public away from using animal products and to imply a negative connotation about animal agriculture.

To define “factory farm”, a factory is defined as a place to manufacture raw products into a value added goods that can be sold. All farms use raw materials, sun, soil, water, and convert them either through plants or livestock or poultry, into value added products that the farm may sell. The farm provides the place where this process occurs.

All dairy farms, all farms for that matter, in Jefferson County, are family owned and operated. In New York State, 99% of farms are family owned and operated. The other 1% of farms not family owned or operated, are run by Universities as training and research facilities for future farmers.
