How Big Are Our Farms?

magosdairy2Our dairy farms range in size from 10 to 2000 animals. The average number of cows on a dairy farm is 115.  Different farmers have found various ways to success as dairy farmers.   All size farms may be successful depending on the management by the farmer.  Frequently, a dairy farm will expand in animal numbers when a family member is brought into the business.

How Are Their businesses Structured?

There are different types of business structures used for the dairy farm business. Some farms are simply a business owned by an individual.  Other farms may be owned by a partnership of two or three or more family members.  Some farms are owned by a Limited Liability Corporation (LLC) which is created by members of a family to provide them with a better business structure that allows them to be part of the ownership of the farm but also protect their own individual assets.  Some farms are structured as corporations when necessary by family owners to help them manage their business better when multiple family members are involved with large operations.
